Fauci knew why the hearing was happening. Any deviation from prior testimony, any twisting of words in his diary, or simple Rand Paul fabrications would be grounds for perjury. Only Republicans can lie to Congress and get away with it.
The Fifth Amendment exists for a reason. Nobody seems to know what it's for. Confessions obtained under torture or duress, actual witch trials, etc, are not a new thing.

There is another part of me that would want him to release a torrent of truth, a filibuster of reality from a doctor not from a politician, to stifle the unending torrent of prevarication from the Administration and it's enablers over the the past year and the past decade. As far as I can tell, besides being a Federal official doing his duty, Fauci has no nexus at all with Florida, Mississippi, or Louisiana. What possible form of "self dealing" could result in an criminal charge in those states. Although an investigative subpoena only needs a "suspicion" of wrong doing, the wrongdoing has to be something the state allows the AG to pursue. Hope Fauci gets those suckers quashed ASAP. I think his lawyer considered it to be the best option to avoid a lying to Congress trap.
