Given the trap that you discuss, and given that Fauci and others who have been put in this position by the current majority in Congress are being hunted for actually being public servants I still wonder which is better? Pleading the 5th and leaving the nation to misunderstand what is happening, or use the moment to tell the truth, pound the table, shut up the people who are promulgating this nonsense and rally the nation around them. Fauci knew why the hearing was happening. Any deviation from prior testimony, any twisting of words in his diary, or simple Rand Paul fabrications would be grounds for perjury. Only Republicans can lie to Congress and get away with it.
The Fifth Amendment exists for a reason. Nobody seems to know what it's for. Confessions obtained under torture or duress, actual witch trials, etc, are not a new thing.

I think his lawyer considered it to be the best option to avoid a lying to Congress trap.
