Question: Why stay in this country? 12% of our way through Trump2 and the damage is serious, permanent, and accelerating. My grandparents stayed too long in Poland and were killed by the (original) Nazis. My father survived and came to this country, and now I feel that I need to escape. I am 68, and would like to live the rest of my life where I now reside, but I am increasingly active working on an alternative.

Stay and fight. Please. Pretty soon there might be no place left to run to. I'm 76 and feel almost exactly as you do.

I applaud your initiative. I am in the process of doing as you describe. It's very demanding, but being an exile beats being a refugee or internee -- as your family knows. Wishing you and others Godspeed.

It's a personal decision that you need to make yourself and with your family's history, I can certainly understand it.

Unfortunately, the rise on the right seems to be a global phenomena as we're entering an era of resource scarcity and upheaval.

Things like having LGBTQ+ loved ones and wanting a place for them to be safe in makes an already fraught decision more difficult, when trying to judge politics in places that you might not be as plugged into.

TX redistricting plans -- only 1 part of multi-pronged attack. Tunnel vision is tempting but usually pernicious. Ds were approx. 100% unprepared for B v G in 2000. Rs' corporate jets were warming up on runways as D attorneys scrambled for seats on commercial flights. 2000 scotus also prepared to exercise its discretionary power to overturn FL Sup Ct. [Shadow docket sure is handy....]. Are Ds thinking about known firms such as Palantir [ aka parasites on middle class taxpayers ] and the capacity for electoral data collection aka data manipulation-?? We should acknowledge multiple blinking red lights.

That's huge news about Schiff who was the House manager of the first impeachment of Trump and has been a target for Republican vilification from way back. Not coincidentally Schiff is in the ranks of democrats who show up in the 2028 democrat presidential primaries. Trump has done this kind of thing before when he target Biden in 2024. I suppose Trump will target Jamie Raskin next if he can find even a scintilla of dirt on him.

A few quick points:

Anyone surprised either that Trump’s a vindictive scumbag or sooo wanted a DOJ fully compliant to his wants, please. It’s obvious to anyone who’d been paying attention.

As for that Jeffries/Martin thing: If anyone needs yet more proof that the DCCC and Jeffries have no meaningful interest in getting a House majority, the shit David’s reporting.

As to the assault on the universities. I spent a lot of my working life in academia and am dismayed at Trump's attacks. Public universities are highly dependent on tuition and fees to stay solvent. This in turn makes them vulnerable to both state and federal political interference. This usually shows up in budgeting for departments and schools. Another Achilles heel is that the big research universities are dependent on out-of-state students paying higher tuitions and especially postbacc level international student enrollments in a given universities graduate colleges and schools. Usually the state legislatures don't mess with our enrollments, but this recent ideological approach is something we haven't seen in decades from the federal government. It's embarrassing to see private institutions like Columbia and Harvard with their massive private endowments, getting on their knees. The big public research universities in the blue states are going to be harder nuts for Trump to crack.
