I can confidently predict that the "new all-time low" is a temporary situation.

This is the end of a once great country . Scotus allowed the orange man baby to go way over the top ,Now he wouldn't listen to them if they got hard on him . So will he send others to jails overseas of course , will he spread his racist bs yes . Will the country end up in a war it can't win yes . Happens to almost every dictator , especially the really stupid ones .

Put every DOJ fecking liar that appears in front of Judge Xinis under oath, and demand truthful testimony under threat of perjury...no more games, no more extra-hearing opinionating, just the facts, ma'am.

DHS/DOJ are test-marketing an escalation of snatch-and-disappear targets, which initially started with immigrants of little legal standing — i.e., w/o a visa, then stepped up to snatching and deporting student-visa holders. Now, with the snatch-and-disappear of Mohsen Mahdawi , a 10-yr Green Card holder, spirited right out of a citizenship interview, not even that class of landed immigrants is safe.

And, as tRump mused, next up are the "home-grown", i.e., native-born or naturalized Americans, that can be targeted for snatch-and-disappear...all this while giving SCOTUS a double middle-finger salute. "Rule of law"? "Fuck you, I AM THE LAW", sez tRump, as he proudly introduces patrimonialist fascism to a waiting nation.

I'm so old I can remember back in 2000 when Republicans thought ballots cast by members of the military stationed abroad were SACRED and had to be all counted regardless of errors because... MILITARY.

It is the sheer cruelty of this-- only sadistic people would deprive this family of their father and husband. For them to claim to be Christians is blasphemy

I guess the periodic reminders are again needed:

The Roberts court pretty much has no issue with Trump lawlessness, unconstitutional acts and refusal to comply with lower court orders. I should add that given the Roberts court’s track record of putting party goals before the rule of law — Dobbs is the ur-example; there are of course many others — there should be no surprise there.

Given that all, approximately nothing in today’s post should be all that surprising but rather, for those with a sufficiently perverse imagination, expected.

I suppose that a related reminder is also needed: In twenty-odd years of Roberts’ party hackery, the putative opposition party has had minimal interest, if that much. (Must… remember… to vote and to vote D. It beats any other alternative. Barely.)

This is the new norm.

Let's try to remember

one thing. Chief Justice

Roberts has an ego. He

considers SCOTUS "his"

court. He may be a bit

of a coward, but he's still

got that ego and he's

"home-grown"; think of

what Sotomayor said in

her comments. And pray

for Abrego Garcia.

Great opening comment

David.

Re: my take on what Judge Xinis should do to force the issue one way or another:

Judge Xinis should enter a simple one line order:

“The United States shall facilitate and effectuate the return of KAB to the United States by May 15, 2025.”

This leaves all “means” to accomplish this up to the Executive branch without dictating how to comply with this order.

I think the timing gives SCOTUS enough time to make its decision.

It appears that both the president and the Court are trying to avoid a head-on clash

The Court is making it easy on Trump by writing its opinion in such a way that allows the president some latitude in interpretation. I would imagine this cozy arrangement satisfies both.

"Cabal" is one of the words I thought of, David. I said Evil Cabal, you said Mendacious. Sadly, they are both too mild. Totally dystopian. Stephen Miller, not even a lawyer 🙄 😒 ‼️
