There are multiple problems with the *Callais* decision, but on a practical point it's seemingly allowed scrapping the *Purcell* guidelines for enacting political changes "close to upcoming elections"; notably here it's LA Gov. Landry "canceling" primary elections just when people are in fact voting!

Yes, the GOPers have seized the moment and grabbing House seats all over the map, but in other times these "redistricting" ploys would have taken effect during a succeeding election cycle, and NOT one only a few months away.

The Democrats have absolutely no choice but to play ruthless hardball, if only to prevent themselves from becoming a permanent minority party in Congress...is that not motivation enough?

Ginger Rogers -- indeed. As for 'far-fetched' responses to gop coup, eg reducing retirement age of justices on Va S Ct, is not the country burning to the ground..?? Whatever it takes.

I agree that labeling the proposed reduction in retirement age as "far-fetched" is foreclosing creative thinking, which seems to be a chronic state of affairs in Dem circles. It used to be called "thinking outside the box," but "whatever it takes" seems to encompass the kind of creativity and courage needed in this hour of watching the country "burn to the ground." The days of treating every political and legislative and strategic decision like a gentlemen's Board Room exercise have to end for Dem leadership. I no longer have any sympathy for the fact that they ran for office to be legislators and didn't sign up to be courageous. Being courageous and rising to the level of leadership that's called for is the job they have, and that's the job they need to perform, or they are going to become anachronisms faster than they can fly back to their Districts and try to salvage their political careers facing constituents who no longer see them as worthy of reelection.

Well, I’ve had the epiphany that I’ve been too sanguine re the white supremacist/racist redistricting so I feel like MAGA stupid.

OTOH, we still have the wild card, as it were, since last November: An apparent historic antipathy for and simple hatred of the Republican brand. So outside hardcore red state, that is, in purple and borderline purple states, I’m still not sure redistricting will help or be a disaster for Democrats. D voters actually managed to turn out in and since November. So add a better D turn out and true independent/swing voters voting D and… I dunno.

So I guess I’m still sanguine, just less so. And for years now, I’ve been maybe less trusting of polls than I am of the voters so, again, who knows. Magic 8 ball cloudy and all that.

Thanks for keeping up on the poor bastards blown out of the ocean count. No one else is!

Thank you. What a dumpster fire our country has become. In South Carolina, 40% of white voters vote Democrat. Our Black population is slightly more than 26%. If half of the Black population votes Democrat, there should never be a Republican victory at the polls. However, these voters will have NO representation at either the Federal or State levels once this plan goes into effect unless some Republicans defect. True taxation without representation.

All of these supposed drug running boats being blown up and people killed? Where are the drugs they're transporting? There's wreckage of boats and some survivors, but I haven't seen any evidence of packaged drugs.

Trump is off to China with a bevy of top dollar bros and no diplomats tomorrow. Not 1 representative of we, the little people, who are picking up the tab for this.

On another note, Adam Klasfeld alerts us to the ongoing Passion Play involving the trump regime and the long-suffering Kilmar Abrego Garcia, where the DOJ is bloody-mindedly determined to ship the man to some — any! — African country, rather than just allow him to relocate to Costa Rica. Courtroom proceedings continue tomorrow:

Regarding South Carolina, you appear to have missed the fact that 3-2 vote was in the House; there was no supporting vote in the Senate before they adjourned. This means it would be difficult for them to come back this summer and wipe out Clyburn's seat.

The state Senate adjourned last week without voting on the measure, but only for the week. They're back this week. The legislative session ends May 14.
