fyi, Katie Benner (NYT) advised that Florida prosecutors have been working quietly on the MAL investigation for a very long time (ie, the grand jury is not a new development but the final step).

Not quite right. The Florida grand jury is relatively new. I don't want to quibble about "a very long time" but here for example is how The Guardian has reported it:

"To that end, prosecutors last month started issuing subpoenas to multiple Trump aides that compelled them to testify before a new grand jury in Florida, impaneled around the time that the grand jury in Washington stopped taking new evidence, the Guardian previously reported."

So we're talking early May, which in criminal investigation terms is pretty recent.
