I've got news for Bernie Moreno (OH): contrary to the GOP fixation that the only women who "count" are the fecund ones, women over 50 don't actually lose their capacity to think after menopause. We of course have children and grandchildren who still face the dangers of the draconian restrictions on abortion. But we also care about bodily autonomy for its own sake. It isn't impossible to imagine a society of "privatized Medicare" in which women are deemed ineligible for certain medical treatments as they age, simply because women live longer and it would really help the bottom line if they shoved off earlier.
Too fantastic? Consider Afghanistan, where the Taliban now doesn't let women SPEAK out loud in public from the depths of the burqa. That's motivated by religion, but ageism, patriarchy, hierarchy and profit can achieve similar results.
Younger women don't realize that until 1972 married women couldn't have credit cards or brokerage accounts in their own name. I discovered this personally upon my divorce--I turned out to have NO credit history nor any ability to manage the stock account we reserved for the kids' education because my social security number was not attached to either the card or the brokerage account, both set up in the 60s. My grandmother was widowed in 1933 and got a widow's pension in the grand sum of $10 a month, which never increased until she died in 1977.
