“it’s clear now the Louisiana Republican has a very stark choice in front of him — pass a Ukraine aid bill or remain speaker.”
On the contrary the only way Johnson survives as speaker is to pass Ukraine aid. Bringing a passable bill for Ukraine aid to the floor will guarantee him help from democrats to survive.
As someone who did witness the entire arc of the Choice debate (my late wife was a Friend of Jane when she was at the University of Chicago), I well remember the day Roe v Wade was announced and the first law school class anywhere to be 50-50 men-women erupted in cheers. And then unfortunately my wife and all those women who fought that fight had to live long enough to see it lost. (I really think her final decline in Parkinson's began that day) And now we get to see the motherfucking pieces of shit hoist on their own petard. Karma's a bitch and she keeps addresses.
*Judge* Cannon, I'm moved to say, has shown some actual legal finesse by first, laying out ludicrous rulings guaranteed to get SC Smith out of his chair and offering rebuttals and motions that could threaten Cannon's position as trial judge, but then pulling back just enough to diminish a recusal motion, yet still maintaining her "I'm the boss here" posture. Sure, she's obviously shown some degree of deference - if not bias - toward Defendant tRump, but skillfully enough to date - after her earlier, disastrous slapdown by the 11th CA - to avoid a direct hit on a motion to recuse, and no doubt mightily frustrating the prosecution by constant foot-dragging.
But as it stands now, it's her court, her trial, and her schedule, and that's not about to change. Jack Smith is still pushing for a PRA ruling, but Cannon's position is, "in its own time", and yet more time-wasting and leaving this implicit threat to the prosecutors' case a live issue, and not giving Smith as yet anything concrete to take to the 11th CA on appeal.
Have we been underestimating *Judge* Cannon all this time?
I believe she is being covertly coached by trump-supporting legal experts. I doubt she's got the wherewithal to pull it off based on her own knowledge - she's not that bright.
Cannon as it turns out seems to be a fairly smart judge. She is obviously all in for t***p and she knows that Smith knows it. She will do everything she can for t***p being very careful NOT to give Smith anything to appeal. I believe her path is now set, when she runs out of delays that can't be appealed, she will start the trial, seat the jury, let Smith get a few days into his case then announce an acquittal of t***p based on her interpretation of the Presidential Records Act. Smith would be done t***p would be free and could not be charged again.
Cruz has strong bipartisan bona fides--he is loathed by colleagues on both sides of the aisle
